Mmm.. Usually I really like a good cheese and spinach roll..

But yesterday evening, while waiting for a poetry reading to start in Brunswick (don’t ask), I had nothing to do and while sitting in Borders poring over trashy magazines I realised I was slowly but surely starving to death..

As all the sandwhichy type places on Lygon St had already closed and I didn’t want sushi and couldnt’ really be bothered walking anywhere I settled on a Gloria Jeans spinach and cheese roll..

Undeterred by the unglamorous plastic plate, knife and fork, I plunged into the piping hot roll and burnt my tongue..
But I soldiered on..
The ability to cut effectively with a blunt-ish plastic knife is severely impacted by how hungry you are and I was having much difficulty eating my sausage-roll looking specimen (it was too hot too hold in my hand)s.. Rather than cutting it up into small pieces I seemed to be dissecting it..

Yet despite all these hurdles, once I began eating my cheese and spinach roll it seemed rather nice…
A few mouthfuls along and I had downgraded my assessment of it to merely pleasant.. and half way through I decided it was edible and really nothing special..

There were these pine nuts lurking everywhere.. I like pinenuts.. Well at least I think I do.. I looove pesto and that always has pinenutes in it.. But lately (well the last two occasions I have had stuff with pinenuts in it) I have been developing the sneaky suspicion that maybe I don’t reaaaally like them.. And last night I found them intolerable and not any real addition to my meal..
The pastry was fine.. although it is always hard to tell when things are heated up in the microwave and the pastry always ends up soggy anyway..
But where was the spinach?? This was spinach and cheese roll distinctly lacking on the spinach side…

And the cheese was a little disconcerting.. fetta? ricotta? I could hardly tell.. I seemed like Indian paneer or even tofu or tasteless scrambled egg.. there was heaps of it but it really didn’t do much at all..
And I don’t know what the flecks of chilli were doing there either.. Masquerading as flavour? I certainly couldn’t taste them..
But the hint of pepper was quite welcoming 

So the culinary force that is Gloria Jeans has a long way to go in the spinach and cheese roll department.. haha

But I should probably just avoid eating there and just stick to reading Air-freighted magazines from Italy that cost $25  but are FREEEEEE when you sit down at Borders and read them.. hehe

If someone walks past you, says ‘excuse me’, and chooses to sit next to you on a two-seater couch you should be nice and take your feet off the couch and not take up more than half the space on the couch and impinge on their personal space… gaaaaa

And to the Arts Office…
The next time you lose my forms when I needed something important done I will get VERY angry.

Anyway.. on a side note..

Last week a random van pulled up out of nowhere at uni and some young, attractive, chirpy promotors started handing out these…

I got exciting and though they were cans of juice (who knows why I thought it was juice… juice never comes in cans…)
but they were of course a Spring Valley energy drink..
Now I have vented my concern towards Spring Valley’s marketing team in the past so I will not touch on that subject again..
But I have to say that energy drinks, in essence, ALL taste the same..

Now I don’t know if a traumatising experience involving a night of solely vodka+redbull is to blame, but I don’t really like energy drinks..
I would rather drink heaps of coffee (and iced coffees in summer) to get my energy fix..

And then yesterday at uni there were Red Bull people handing out drinks as well..

At least they are in touch with the right market/demographic hehe

anyway, peace out..
It’s week 4 of uni and I think I should attempt to start studying.. or print out some notes or something productive at least!

Is it just me or are the Qantas uniforms reeeeeally ugly?

This photo doesn’t really show them in their true light (professional photography has a way of doing that) but I can assure you that those indigenous print dresses are a real eye-sore.. (and not very flattering)

And as for the boring black suits.. euuggh
Could they be any more boring?

They have heaps of hand rolls but also have a specials board with other Japanese-y things as well as sashimi and other stuff too..

The place looks really funky from the outside and I was excited about the prospect of some sushi after my not-so-memorable experience with a salmon handroll from Plush Fish the other week..
(And as much as I tell people Carnegie is a coool suburb and is getting trendier by the day I don’t really hold this belief and am surprised whenever I find a nice place to eat in Carnegie.. so I didn’t really have high hopes for the sushi I bought today..)

Anyway.. the sushi was yuuum.. I got a prawn hand roll and a salmon hand roll and they were the best handrolls I have had in ages!
(although I did have to pay 20 cents for soy sauce.. grrrrrr)

And since I’m on the subject of Carnegie I would just like to say that I’ve branched out in the last year and tried coffee from most of the cafe’s on Koornang Rd…
to summarise:

Fig Jam – wooow what a bad coffee.. tepid, weak and baring little resemblance to a cappuccino
Carnegie Deli - also very bad. bitter and impossible to drink.. eeuugh
Bambala (I think that’s what it’s called) – can’t remember why it was bad but it wasn’t nice..
Michel’s Patisserie – hmmm.. decidedly average..

And the only place with nice coffee, Il Piccolo Cafe’, has changed owners and the cool Italian guy that owned it isn’t there any more.. grrrr

Anyway, I have no intention of going  back to any of these places because the coffee at Santucci’s is always nice and they have been longer than everyone else..!
